Bassini, Edoardo
Edoardo Bassini (Pavia, April 14th 1844 – Vigasio, July 19th 1924), studied Medicine at the University of Pavia under famed anatomist Luigi Porta. He perfected his skills after the degree in renowned European clinics and was assistant to Porta, before moving to work in Parma, La Spezia and Padua.
He took part in the third Independence War and was with the Cairoli brothers during the 1867 attempt to support the imminent insurrection of the patriots in Rome. He was wounded to the abdomen by bayonet during the Villa Gori battle and lived with the consequences of the injury for the rest of his life. In 1904 he was nominated Senator of the Kingdom.
Bassini is mostly remembered for his study of the anatomy of the inguinal region and for developing an original surgical treatment method for hernia.
